Salt air along the coast and ten months of run time push that toward the low end. An oversized system cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out of the house. The result is a home that is cold and clammy at the same time, with humidity high enough to encourage mold. We size every system with a load calculation that accounts for your square footage, insulation, window exposure, and our humidity, rather than simply matching whatever tonnage was there before. Long, steady run times are what keep a Southwest Florida home comfortable. ## SEER2, Refrigerant, and Florida Energy Code New systems are rated under the SEER2 standard, and Florida's minimum efficiency for split systems is higher than in northern states because of how much cooling we use. A higher-efficiency system costs more up front, but with nine or more months of cooling every year, the difference in operating cost is real and adds up quickly. We will show you the estimated annual cost difference between the options so you can decide what makes sense for your home. The industry has also moved to newer, lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants.
