The difference is a reversing valve that lets the refrigerant cycle run backward, pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. Even a 45-degree morning has plenty of heat in the air for a heat pump to collect, and it does so using a fraction of the electricity that resistance heat strips need. In a climate where winter is short and mild, and where gas service is limited, that makes the heat pump the obvious choice, and it is what nearly every new home in Collier County is built with. ## Heat Pump Repair Because a heat pump runs year-round, it accumulates run hours faster than any other appliance you own. In our humidity, the right size is the one that runs long enough to dry the air, and variable-speed or two-stage equipment does that far better than a single-stage unit. New systems are rated by SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating; with nine months of cooling, SEER2 is where efficiency pays off most. We clean the outdoor and indoor coils, flush the condensate drain, verify refrigerant charge, test the reversing valve and defrost cycle, check the heat strips, measure amp draws, and tighten electrical connections.
