The first cold front of January drops overnight temperatures into the 40s, you switch the thermostat to heat for the first time in ten months, and nothing happens, or worse, cold air blows out of the vents. Nearly every home in Naples and Marco Island heats with one of two things: - **A heat pump**, which is the same outdoor unit that cools your house in summer, running in reverse to pull heat from the outdoor air. This is the standard heating source in Southwest Florida and by far the most efficient. - **Electric heat strips** in the air handler, either as the only heat source on a "straight-cool" system or as backup ("auxiliary" or "emergency" heat) on a heat pump. Understanding which you have matters, because they fail in different ways and cost very different amounts to run. Our technicians work on both every week and will tell you which one you are relying on. ## Common Heating Problems We Repair - **Heat pump blowing cool air.** Often a stuck reversing valve, a refrigerant leak, or a thermostat wiring issue. Sometimes it is simply the defrost cycle doing its job for a few minutes. - **Auxiliary heat running constantly.** The heat pump is not keeping up and the heat strips are carrying the load, which shows up as a surprising electric bill in February. - **No heat at all.** Burned-out heat strip elements, a failed sequencer or relay, a tripped high-limit switch, or a breaker that will not hold. - **Thermostat problems.** A thermostat that is not configured for a heat pump will run the system incorrectly or not at all in heating mode. - **Burning smell on first use.** Usually dust burning off the heat strips after months of sitting idle. It should clear in minutes; if it does not, turn the system off and call us. - **Outdoor unit icing over** or running loudly in heating mode, which points to a defrost control or sensor issue. - **Corrosion damage.** Salt air on the coast attacks the same outdoor coil, contactor, and wiring whether the unit is heating or cooling. ## Signs You Need Heating Repair - Air from the vents is cool or barely warm when the thermostat is set to heat - The thermostat shows "aux" or "emergency heat" and will not go back to normal - The system runs for a long time but the house stays cold - Ice or frost builds up on the outdoor unit and does not melt - A burning or electrical smell that lasts more than a few minutes - Loud clicking, buzzing, or humming from the air handler - A breaker trips whenever the heat comes on - Your winter electric bill is far higher than the weather justifies ## Why We Fix It Right the First Time Because heating season in Naples is short, some contractors treat heat calls as an afterthought. A heat pump that struggles in January is the same machine you will need to cool your house in June, and the reversing valve, refrigerant charge, and electrical parts we test in heating mode are the ones that fail in cooling mode.
