What a Heat Pump Is and Why It Is the Standard Here

A heat pump looks exactly like a central air conditioner, and in cooling mode it works exactly like one. The difference is a reversing valve that lets the refrigerant cycle run backward, pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. Even a 45-degree morning has plenty of heat in the air for a heat pump to collect, and it does so using a fraction of the electricity that resistance heat strips need. In a climate where winter is short and mild, and where gas service is limited, that makes the heat pump the obvious choice, and it is what nearly every new home in Collier County is built with.

Heat Pump Installation and Replacement

When we replace a heat pump we size it with a load calculation for your home, not the number stamped on the old unit. In our humidity, the right size is the one that runs long enough to dry the air, and variable-speed or two-stage equipment does that far better than a single-stage unit. New systems are rated by SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating; with nine months of cooling, SEER2 is where efficiency pays off most. We install current-refrigerant equipment, and for homes near the Gulf we recommend coated coils and corrosion-resistant hardware. Financing is available. Heat Pump Maintenance

A heat pump should be serviced at least once a year, and because it works in two modes, a good tune-up checks both. We clean the outdoor and indoor coils, flush the condensate drain, verify refrigerant charge, test the reversing valve and defrost cycle, check the heat strips, measure amp draws, and tighten electrical connections. • Lukewarm air in cooling mode, or cool air in heating mode
• Ice on the outdoor unit that never melts, in either season
