Heat pump (recommended for most homes)

A heat pump is an air conditioner with a reversing valve that lets it move heat into the house instead of out of it. In our mild winters a heat pump delivers two to three times as much heat per dollar of electricity as heat strips, and it is the standard heating source for new homes here. Straight-cool AC with electric heat strips

Many older Naples homes have an air conditioner that only cools, with electric resistance heat strips in the air handler for the cold days. It works, and it is inexpensive to install, but the strips are the most costly way to make heat. If you keep a straight-cool system, we size the heat strip kit correctly and make sure the breaker and wiring can handle it.

Gas furnaces and dual-fuel systems

Natural gas is limited in most of Collier County, and propane furnaces are unusual. We will discuss them if your home already has gas service and you prefer it, but for most homeowners a heat pump is the better answer on cost, simplicity, and efficiency.

Replacing Heating and Cooling Together

Because the outdoor unit and the air handler work as a matched pair, replacing only half of a system is rarely a good idea. Mismatched equipment loses efficiency, can void manufacturer coverage, and often runs into refrigerant compatibility problems with newer units. When we replace a heating system, we look at the whole system, the ductwork, and the electrical service, and give you a straight answer about what actually needs to change.

Sizing and Efficiency Ratings

We size every system with a load calculation rather than copying the old tonnage. In our climate, correct sizing is mostly about humidity control in summer, but it affects heating too: an oversized heat pump short-cycles and leans on its backup heat strips more than it should. Two efficiency numbers apply to a heat pump: SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating. With as much cooling as we do, SEER2 is the one that moves your bill the most, and Florida's energy code sets a higher minimum than northern states. We will show you the operating-cost difference between standard and high-efficiency options so the choice is an informed one.

What to Expect During Installation

• An in-home visit to measure, check the ductwork and electrical, and discuss what you want from the system
• A written proposal with equipment options, pricing, and financing terms
• Removal of the old equipment and proper recovery of the refrigerant
• Installation of the new air handler, outdoor unit, heat strip kit (if applicable), disconnect, and a new condensate float switch
• For coastal homes, coated coils and corrosion-resistant hardware where warranted
• Pressure testing, evacuation, and charging to the manufacturer's specification
• Thermostat setup, configured correctly for heat pump operation, and a walkthrough
• Permit and inspection with Collier County or the City of Marco Island
• Haul-away of the old system and cleanup
